    Misrecognition

During my long teaching career, I have witnessed teachers and parents reinforcing student's apparent lack of ability which is unfortunate. Every student is an individual adapting to life's challenges in varying ways and as teachers and parents we must give every student a chance and encourage them t

    Growth mindset v Fixed mindset

It's so fascinating that mindset can impact the direction of our lives. Growth mindset can have a positive effect on aspirations as it incorporates resilience, lifelong learning and higher expectations. Growth mindset can break down barriers and set students onto the path of uncharted waters. Such

    Reflection

I especially enjoyed viewing the chart which linked prestige and masculine/feminine occupations. It made me stop and think about how my own aspirational development and it was good for reflection.

A very useful framework to explore professions and social as well as self expectations.

It was interesting to think about my own choices and opportunities in my journey to becoming a teacher and thinking about the future. I feel this a powerful tool to use with students both explicitly and as a hidden framework.

I found the Introduction to Aspirations providing a lot of formal background understanding regarding the students I teach.

    Reflection unit 2

I can definitely see self concept and gender roles at play when my kindy kids engage in occupational role play, and identify with the cognitive map of aspirations for my own career choice. I absolutely adored the male librarian at Newcastle uni when studying under grad who was covered in tattoos and

    Unit 2

There was a great deal of valuable information in Unit 2 with regards to aspirations and expectations. It was interesting to think about the number of factors that affect our students in decision making about the future and the important role we as teachers play in guiding them.

I think students are now more aware that they do not have to follow the traditional gender occupations, but I think they are still afraid to

How schools promote growth vs. fixed mindset

As I was completing activity 2.7 in Lesson 7: Growth vs. fixed mindset, I started thinking deeply about the role that schools play in promoting growth and fixed mindsets among students. Before I came to university and started a teaching degree, I think I had a pretty fixed mindset. I was of the i

    Misrecognition

This concept struck a chord with me. I found the short video very interesting and though provoking. It made me reflect on how our community perceives someone's value or worth and how that impacts and influences someone's choices. I would like to share the video with my school community.

    Circumscription and Compromise

Certainly a valuable experience to be able to share the moments as students work their way through the processes of circumscription and finally compromise. So good to actually give them a label that explains the process.

I was interested in the 'Possible Self' - I think I can develop a good lesson for Yr 10 and 11/12 Work Studies with this concept in mind.

    Circumscription versus compromise

In terms of young people committing to a future pathway, is circumscription overvalued and compromise undervalued? Isn't it, or shouldn't it, be more of dynamic process of trial and error?

    Thinking

Unit 2 was very dense. A lot to get through and very research heavy. It would be good to have some videos included in the unit to lighten the reading load. As a career practitioner the 'lessons' made a lot of sense and the information provided sits nicely with career theory and career frameworks. T

    Growth Mindset

It is interesting the power of growth mindset and yet I feel we lack to embrace it. Allowing students opportunities to overcome failures rather than letting them win all the time seems to be a past time gone. Students are seeing mistakes as failures and less valuing even more these day than ever.

    Circumspection and compromise

I found these concepts very interesting in light of the fact that most Australians will have a number of career changes in our lifetimes. I think it is worthwhile making it clear to students that they will likely also change careers a number of times, so it is worth considering how they make decisio

    Expectations Vs Aspirations

As someone who began their higher education very much following the 'expectations' placed upon me, I quickly realised how unhappy I was with my chosen path. Fast forward to now when I have allowed myself to follow my aspirations - my life and career path is much more pleasant and rewarding.

As someone who was pushed to access further study by my parents, it was interesting to see that link between expectations and achievement

    Unit 2

As someone who is a teacher and a student at the same time, I have always appreciated the 'growth mindset' approach to both learning and teaching. If i dont know the answer to a question, i acknowledge it in front of my students and encourage them to search the answer and educate me about it.

    Aspiration Unit

This unit was very interesting and I enjoyed completing the questions in my journal. I made links between my journey in education with the models presented. I could see how and why I made the choices I did based on my capital, field and habitus and I am so thankful to the feminist teachers in my hi

    Mindset

Interesting to see how this idea of mindset has changed over my lifetime. At school you pathway was almost predetermined. If you left in year 9 or 10 you were going to become a tradie if you continued you were going to univesity. Classes were streamed and you were almost placed in a box. Today while
