I was the first in my family to attend University. It was difficult for me to move away from home and travel long distances. I missed my family so much, but I kept the big picture in mind and just had to ask myself often, why am I doing this and where do I want to be career wise in so many years.

I was FiF, from a small country town and low socio-economic. When I got to Uni in Brisbane I was completely lost. I had to teach myself about referencing and essay writing because I had done Maths/Science to get the better score and then went to Uni to study humanities. It was the loneliest time of my life. I was miserable. Even when I made friends, I felt I didn't belong.
I was also FIF and that was a challenge for me. I didn't want to move away from my family nor could I afford to. I was lucky that there was a university within 40 minutes of my home so I decided to travel each day rather than move. Once there, I found a group of people who were doing the same thing and we started a car pool which saved me so much money and I developed lasting friendships with them.
