    Expectations

After completing this course, it made me realise lots of things that one may take for granted. I will now read up more on research that has been covered in these units and apply it to working with my current students and even my own children. As educators, we could be doing so much more. As parents,

    Career activities in primary school

It was interesting to see that most teachers in the data (primary or secondary) seem to see Years 7 and 8 as the 'sweet spot' for beginning career education. I think the most important thing we can do in primary schools is to expose students to a wide-range of people and jobs that exist in the commu

    Teachers Role

Beginning, aspiring and practising teachers should work through these units. It sets out in very clear terms how we can influence our students. The other point that I think needs to be mentioned is that we are not the sole source of knowledge. We need to engage parents, employers, TAFE, universitie

    Career advisor

What an empowering course for teachers! Like the fish thinking nothing of the water (until it’s taken out and shown it!) it seems easy to forget the privileges we take advantage of and how sharing something as mundane as our own career pathway may be life changing for students and their communities.

    Aspirations Summary

I now realise the importance of teachers to having positive conversations with our students about their career path and descisions as well as discussing our own career path and job. I believe we need to always inspire the students we teach to have high aspirational goals for themselves and to let th

    Schooling and Teachers matter

It was wonderful to see the passionate teachers supporting the aspirations of students. Teachers do make a difference as the slogan goes and John Hattie as it right when his research showed that teachers have the most effect on student learning. A terrific course.

Possible whole-school strategy for finding out students' aspirations

As I've been completing the units and working through the questions in the learning journal, my lack of knowledge of my (previous) students' career aspirations has become embarrassingly obvious! Admittedly, I have only recently complete my teaching degree so I have limited classroom experience to

    Role of the teacher

Teachers can be inspiring role models for students and have a positive effect on students' aspirations, particularly when the students feel they are being supported and that the teacher believes in them. This was clear in the video with Di and the Science head teacher where he didn't want to offer h

Gonski quote in the Conversation article

The Gonski 2.0 quote about the lack of school-community engagement to improve student learning. My Story platform is brilliant too. These relate not only for careers / student futures (aspirations) but to learning in different subject, both STEM and HASS / Citizenship Education related.

    Role of teachers

This unit reminded me of how important teachers can be as role models in students' lives but also how easy it is, often through circumstances in children's lives, for them to drop off the radar and not have connection to teachers or just be 'managed' as behaviour problems. Teachers are busy but we n

    Teachers

This unit again underlined for me how important teachers were to students' lives. The difference an engaged and encouraging teacher was evident in the videos (eg Amy in video 36).

    Expectations

This unit made me think about teacher expectations and how they are expressed to all students in the cohort. Students in the primary school where I teach have very firm opinions about what subjects they are 'good' and ones that they are 'bad', based on achievement. These opinions have stemmed from t

After doing this course I am grateful for the opportunity to consider the many ways that teachers can influence the future aspirations of students.Teacher expectations and support are so important for students. Teachers: the source of inspiration

This was an interesting unit. Watching Di's story about a child who the head teacher turned a blind eye to and undermined her curiosity about science, does relate to me. I, too, have witnessed how teachers ignore a child's quest for knowledge. As teachers, we have the biggest role model and source o

    Power of a teacher

Teachers are inspiring role models, who play a pivotal role in the lives of their students. Teachers who believe in their students, who support and encourage their students and who raise the raise the bar/expectations of their students have a positive effect on students' aspirations. Thoughts on what to put in Action Plans

This PL has really helped me to see how my teaching in early learning can still have a huge impact on my students later in life. I am very lucky to be teaching within a private Christian school, where the vast majority of our students have a least one parents with a Bachelors or higher education. I

    Unit 6

This unit made me realise just how important we, as teachers are, in helping guide our students to achieving their future aspirations. It is important to provide time for discussions with students, starting in the primary years, about their goals and how they can reach them.

    Unique cohort

I work in a Distance Education School and our students are very diverse with 66% experiencing mental health challenges. We do a lot of one on one work with the families so we can develop strong relationships. We have to be mindful of the situation at any given time so that we can encourage when stud
