This unit reminded me of how important teachers can be as role models in students' lives but also how easy it is, often through circumstances in children's lives, for them to drop off the radar and not have connection to teachers or just be 'managed' as behaviour problems. Teachers are busy but we need to be mindful of the messages we communicate to students.

I was really surprised that students generally don't talk to each other about their aspirations. But on reflection I can see that this is my daughter's experience. If you speak out you risk being ridiculed so it is safer to speak in generalisations only. I'm slightly disappointed by this but also relieved. It points to a greater diplomacy and understanding of group mentality than I had assumed, and is to a certain extent protective.

I've been told the above in the context of negotiating in the workplace, but doing this unit has made me realise that for many students accessing higher education there are so many other layers to work through, including race and remoteness. Having said that, I support equity policies for men in female majority workplaces as I believe no workplace policies and conditions should be dictated by the majority. Additionally, it is vital that workplace policies cater to the clients. There is no doubt in my mind that, for example, patients in hospitals and students in schools benefit from having men as nurses and teachers.

I agree with Bethany that we should be pushing VET more. As I work between both systems I can see how beneficial VET training can be as an option for students straight out of school as well as mature age students. While VET has well established promotional programs and is generally understood to be the educational provider for apprenticeships, until teachers work between both systems it is unlikely that VET will be promoted to the extent that university is. Unfortunately teachers who work in the VET system find that neither their teaching experience or professional learning is recognised by the Department of Education in their state or territory.

I found these concepts very interesting in light of the fact that most Australians will have a number of career changes in our lifetimes. I think it is worthwhile making it clear to students that they will likely also change careers a number of times, so it is worth considering how they make decisions about education pathways to careers as these will no doubt influence their choices the next time around.

I'm a casual teacher in the ACT and I'm really intrigued to about how students' aspirations are shaped by teachers but also those around them. I'm hoping to learn a lot!
