In Unit 6
Teachers can be inspiring role models for students and have a positive effect on students' aspirations, particularly when the students feel they are being supported and that the teacher believes in them. This was clear in the video with Di and the Science head teacher where he didn't want to offer his support, which resulted in the student not pursuing her career aspiration and then leaving the school. I was shocked that the Science teacher didn't want to help a student that wanted a career in his specialty area. I know that if a student wanted a career in music, I would help them as best I could.

In Unit 4
I am the 3rd child in a family of 7 and I was the first and only one of my family members to attend university. I originally aspired to become a veterinarian but being from a rural town, the school didn't offer the subjects required to get into university. I didn't know about distance education at the time otherwise I would have chosen to study the subjects through this mode. Therefore, I decided to strive to get into a science degree first and then hopefully change over to veterinary science. My aspiration to be a vet changed along the line because I wasn't doing as well in science as I hoped, so I ended up applying to study horse management at Orange Agricultural College. It was the best of fun but that didn't last as I had a really bad fall which made me reassess my life decisions. I was always interested in music and at the time I was learning to play the piano. I made the decision to go back to uni and study music, and now I am currently a music teacher at a distance education school. I did learn in the unit that there are other pathways I was not aware of in order to get into university besides getting in and changing courses, or through being a mature aged student like myself the second time around. Eg. Open foundation, The enabling program and Newstep.

I really enjoyed the unit learning about mindset and how it can affect student aspirations. I and now trying to change my language with my students to have a growth mindset focus.
