Beginning, aspiring and practising teachers should work through these units. It sets out in very clear terms how we can influence our students. The other point that I think needs to be mentioned is that we are not the sole source of knowledge. We need to engage parents, employers, TAFE, universities in the proces. When we start this is open to debate, however, children's experiences stay with them for a long time. It is our responsibility to nurture this exploration into their future opportunities. Sure there are a lot of factors which impact on their ability to achieve but, there a many different ways to succeed. We need to encourage them to take a risk. Schools are surely the safest places to fail as we can support them together with family and friends towards their next risk safely.

A lot of students tend to respond initialy, "I would like to do that " but then do not investigate it in their early years. Sometime they feel embarassed because their results to date do not align with their desires. We need to encourage students to explore a wide range of op[portunities. Work experience during holiday breaks is the ideal time. However, few students seem to avail themselves of this. This could remove the "fear" parents, friends, relatives and students may have around talking about thir aspirations.

A very dense unit. Interesting to see the data and how peoples views can be affected by results. I think students, across the board, are better informed about the opportunies available to them. However, the ties to family, culture, support stil combine to inform students decisions. Open days, guest speakers, careers markets sall go someway to breaking or allaying these concerns.

We, as teachers, should explain the attributes of the various pathways open to students be it a year off, a job , TAFE or university study. All have advantages for the people in our care. The reason you have choseb a TAFE pathway initially does not preclude them from going to Uni at a later date. Conversely the opposite is also true. We need to enjoy what we do and often we need different experiences to clarify this sense of enjoyment/ purpose.

Interesting to see how this idea of mindset has changed over my lifetime. At school you pathway was almost predetermined. If you left in year 9 or 10 you were going to become a tradie if you continued you were going to univesity. Classes were streamed and you were almost placed in a box. Today while some streaming occurs in subjects like mathematics and science everybody is encoutaged to find there own path. Our challenge is to ensure they are ensure we ameliate to the best of our abilities the blockers to our students achieveing the best thay can.
