This unit again underlined for me how important teachers were to students' lives. The difference an engaged and encouraging teacher was evident in the videos (eg Amy in video 36).

I was very surprised to see how little discussion there was between students regarding their career and school choices. Over 50% reported that this topic was never or rarely discussed with their peers. Why wouldn't you discuss this with your friends?

It was of interest tosee how achievement was correlated with socio-demographic background and it was useful to have the six equity groups spelled out. I do wonder though if we should be paying more attention to boys as they are falling behind in achievement at school all over the world.

This unit had a lot of material. It was a pleasant surprise to see that interest and altruism were two of the main drivers of career choice at school.

This was an interesting unit. I found the idea of capacity to aspire a very useful concept. Other aspects of the unit such as the ideas of capital, field, habitus and different types of knowledge in terms of capacity to navigate were also very enlightening.

Hello, My name is Sakiba. I am a casual teacher in the ACT. I am looking forward to learning a lot about how to help shape students' futures from this course.
