Enrol in the course

Free online course for parents, carers and community members

Underpinned by an extensive evidence base, this course provides an enriched understanding of what parents, carers, and community members can do to support and nurture the educational and career aspirations of the young people in their lives.

Course overview

The course is relevant to parents and carers of primary, secondary and senior secondary schools. It consists of a series of four units designed to support parents, carers and community members in understanding and nurturing children’s aspirations and illuminating pathways to higher education.

The focus of each unit is as follows:

UNIT 1

What are Aspirations?

UNIT 3

Influencing Factors

UNIT 2

Career and Educational Aspirations

UNIT 4

Taking a Supporting Role

Each unit provides a suite of digital resources (including videos, activities, links to data and information) designed to develop parents' and carers’ capacity to better support their children.

The units have the following features in common:

1

A conceptual framework to enhance parents’ and carers' understanding of aspiration formation and their role in supporting children.

2

Activities (examples, data, strategies) to help parents and carers in translating the concepts to their own children.

3

Material on education, careers, and preparing for higher education to inform parents’ and carers' interactions with children.

4

Opportunities for parents and carers to engage in online  communities  for enriching their understanding.

This work was funded by the Australian Government Department of Education within the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program.
